Soldiers demanding for pay revolt in Ivory Coast

There are fears that this could lead to a take-over of government by the military as politicians and political officers in the areas already taken over by the soldiers have reportedly fled to safety.

The BBC quoted a member of the country’s parliament from Bouake as confirming that there was mutiny in the city and that it was being carried out by serving soldiers, who are asking for bonuses.
He however said the soldiers do not appear to have a leader of spokesperson that could be related with.

The foreign media organisation said most of those carrying out the mutiny were once in the Forces Nouvelles (the former rebels) and were integrated into the army after the country's civil war ended in 2011.
Between 2002 and 2011, the Forces Nouvelles were said to control the northern part of Ivory Coast.
From the report, the soldiers are reportedly taking over the four major cities of the country as gunfire has been reported in Daloa already.
Residents of Bouake have also expressed fears as they claimed soldiers are looting police stations and taking over streets.

“We can’t say that the situation is back to normal, it's actually worse because since this morning we had soldiers firing at the local station RTI in the Quartier neighborhood, in Bouake.

“At first we thought it was just rumours but between 07:00 and 08:00 in the Kerekoro neighbourhood where I live, people went to chase police officers and municipal employees.
"People wearing military fatigues and carrying Kalashnikovs, they fired in the air and took control of the west corridor. I went then in the city and it was panic. But now all streets are empty," the report quoted a resident as saying adding that the soldiers are demanding about CFA 5,000 ($8,000; £6,500) which they are owed since the end of the civil conflict in the country in 2011.

The country’s government is yet to officially react.
