Woman’s Skull Caves In After Chair Falls On Her From 12th Floor Balcony (Photos)

A woman’s skull caved in after she survived a horrifying freak accident when a chair fell on her from the 12th floor of a penthouse.

Annabel Sen, 24, is “lucky to be alive” after the lounge chair crushed her as she was out with her partner.

The University student had to have two brain surgeries and step back from her studies after the traumatic accident, according to her lawyer.

The New Yorker’s survival has been deemed a “miracle” as she sustained life-threatening injuries, reports NewYorkPost.

The 24-year-old was heading for a lunch date with her partner when a “heavy wooden lounge chair fell from the terrace of the 12-floor penthouse” and struck her, according to a lawsuit filed in Manhattan Supreme Court yesterday, September 24.

The papers, said Sen, from Midtown, sustained a “severe, life-threatening, traumatic brain injury”.

Attorney Benedict Morelli said his client suffered cognitive deficits following the incident and is currently “seeing doctors and recuperating”.

He said:-
“we are hoping she gets back all her faculties”, adding Sen is “very damaged but she is not dead”.

Morelli said it is currently unclear if his client will “regain enough” of her faculties to live a “productive life” as she awaits further testing.

The victim claims the chair should have been secured due to the rainy and windy weather that day.

The Union Square West penthouse in which the chair fell from is owned by Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils co-owner Michael Rubin, court papers state.

Rubin’s spokesperson told the Post he has never lived in the apartment and it was rented out when the incident occurred.

Sen has been forced to leave her job at a private equity firm and is taking legal action against the penthouse owner for negligence, squaring the blame on the building management company and residents.

US To Restrict Nigerian Students To 2-Year Courses Over National Security

Foreign students including Nigerians could be restricted to admission into US universities for not more than a two-year period, a proposed government policy has shown.

The new guidelines from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), if approved, mean affected students will be barred from four-year courses in the US. It was not immediately clear if Nigerian students currently studying in the US would be affected. In the new measures published in the US federal register and scheduled for announcement on Friday, the DHS proposed a “maximum admission period of up to 2 years for certain students”, including those from Nigeria.

Among the countries targeted in the new policy are those on the US “State sponsor of terrorism list” and students from countries that visitors have overstay rate of more than 10 percent. The DHS 2019 overstay report puts Nigeria’s in-country overstay rate at 11.12 percent; most African countries are also above the 10 percent maximum rate.

“A key goal of shifting aliens in F status from D/S to an admission for a fixed time period is to provide pre-defined time periods for immigration officers to evaluate whether a nonimmigrant has maintained his or her status,” the DHS said.

“If an immigration officer finds that an alien violated his or her status prior to or during the course of an EOS adjudication and denies the EOS request, the alien generally would begin accruing unlawful presence the day after issuance of the denial.”

It also said that the proposed rule seeks to reduce instances in which F, J, and I nonimmigrants — mostly students and exchange visitors — “unlawfully remain in the United States after their program or practical training ends.

“Under this proposed rule, aliens who remain in the United States beyond a fixed time period generally would begin accruing unlawful presence,” it said.

Following the coronavirus pandemic, the Trump administration was in July forced to abandon a plan to strip international students of their visas if they are not required to attend some classes in person.

Buhari Has Opposed Fuel Price Hike Since 2015 – Nigerian Govt

Boss Mustapha, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), on Thursday, appealed to organised labour ahead of the nationwide strike from Monday.

The SGF noted that President Muhammadu Buhari never wanted oil sector deregulation.

He recalled that the recommendation was made to him in 2015, NAN reports.

Mustapha said these in reaction to labour unions’ opposition to the hike in prices of electricity and petrol.

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have vowed to shut down Nigeria.

Mustapha explained that the increments were not intended to cause pain or harm.

The decision was taken in the utmost interest of all people, he stressed.

Noting that he was on Presidential Transition Committee, the SGF said one of the team’s decisions was deregulation.

“President Buhari objected to it. Thereafter, the issue was reflected in the final report.

There was the need to consider seriously the issues relating to deregulation of petroleum sector and the need to look at energy sufficiency and efficiency, and what needed to be done.

“When the report was submitted to President Buhari, his reaction was that the Nigerian people elected him not to inflict pain on them.

Five years down the line, that decision has become imperative and cannot be tampered with, it is a decision that must have been painfully considered.”

The SGF said the National Minimum Wage was implemented over a year ago but that COVID-19 had disrupted the economy of the country and others.

The National Industrial Court has restrained NLC and TUC from embarking on strike.

Deliberations between the federal government and union leaders will continue on Monday. A meeting held in Abuja yesterday failed to reach an agreement.

Drama As Students Rescue RCCG Pastor From Kidnappers In Edo

According to a PM News report, brave youths of Benin Technical College (BTC), Benin, Edo State, and members of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), on Sunday rescued a pastor of the church who was abducted by a three-man kidnap gang.

Abductors of the victim, simply identified as Pastor Ayo, in charge of Ologbosere Parish, in Egor Local Government Area of the State, were later apprehended by youths and vigilante men of the community who chased after them.

It was gathered that the suspects who specialised in robbing residents and unsuspecting worshippers on a daily basis, swooped on the community as early as 7.30 am.

A resident of the area who craved anonymity, said the BTC community has been under siege of hoodlums who terrorised members of the several churches in the area.

He said that the suspects had earlier snatched a Toyota Camry car from its owner, but later abandoned it behind Church of God Mission International (CGMi), in the area.

It was learnt that the hoodlums later proceeded to the Redeemed Christian Church God (RCCG), where they dispossessed worshippers of their money, phones, other valuables and abducted the pastor, and whisked him away in his Nissan Xtera SUV with registration Number, LAGOS: EKY 353 CA.

Luck, however, ran out of the three-man gang when the youths, the vigilante men and some of the worshippers gave them a hot chase, resulting in the rescue of the RCCG pastor and the arrest of his abductors.

Leader of the vigilante group who asked not to be named , said it “took the timely intervention of the community youths, worshippers who chased the hoodlums until they abandon the pastor’s vehicle and the pastor.”

He added that the hoodlums terrorising the community “are notorious for snatching cars at various churches during church service.”

Items allegedly recovered from the suspects include two double barrel-cut-to size guns, a Camry car and the Nissan SUV belonging to the RCCG Pastor.

At the time of filing this report, identities of the suspects could not be ascertained, as the Okhoro Divisional Police Station, acting on the orders of the State Police Commissioner had taken the suspects to police headquarters in the state.

Effort to reach the RCCG pastor was unsuccessful as he was said to be receiving medical attention in an undisclosed hospital following injuries sustained during the kidnap attempt.

It was gathered that the timely intervention of the Edo State Police Commissioner, Mr. Mohammed DanMallam, saved the suspects from being lynched by angry youths in the community.

The suspects were later transferred from the Okhoro Divisional Police Station to the State police headquarters for further investigation.
