JUST IN: Buhari, Mahama, Sirleaf Johnson arrive Gambia to persuade

Nigeria’s president, Muhammadu Buhari has arrived Banjul to persuade Yahya Jammeh to respect election result.

In Banjul with Mr Buhari are his counterparts from Ghana and Liberia, John Mahama and President Sirleaf Johnson, Chairperson of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS, and President Ernest Bai Koroma of Sierra-Leone.

They were received at the airport by Gambia's Vice-President, Isatou Njie-Saidy.

Recall that Gambia’s president, Yahya Jammeh who had accepted defeat at the presidential election recently backtracks and asked for a new poll run by a "Godfearing" electoral commission.

President Buhari and the ECOWAS leaders will discuss the ensuing impasse in The Gambia with President Jammeh, and insist on the sanctity of the electoral process, and respect for the wishes of the people.

They would also ask their host to respect the Constitution of his own country, and maintain the inviolability of an electoral process that had been concluded, and in which he had admitted defeat, and congratulated his main challenger.

The leaders are also scheduled to meet the President-elect, Adama Barrow.

President Buhari is expected back in Abuja later today.

Meanwhile, the Presidency has dismissed reports that President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the replacement of two of its service chiefs, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Gabriel Olonisakin and Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice-Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas.

Meanwhile, the meeting between President Buhari, the president of Ghana and the president-elect of Gambia is currently on and no resolution to the deadlock in Gambia has been announced.

The special adviser on media and publicity to Buhari, Femi Adesina posted this on his official Facebook page:

"President Buhari and his co-delegation meet with President-Elect of Islamic Republic of Gambia Adama Barrow during the High Level UN/AU/ECOWAS Joint Mission in Gambia on December 13, 2016."
