Excitement and anxiety filled the air around Benin, the capital city of Edo state on Wednesday, October 19, hours to the final coronation of the new oba, the city’s traditional ruler.
Eheneden Erediauwa becomes the 39th oba of the ancient city from Thursday in a ceremony that is expected to witness the attendance of President Muhammadu Buhari, who is billed to lead top government functionaries including Senate President Bukola Saraki and other lawmakers to the event. Top traditional rulers from within and outside Nigeria are also being expected at the event.
The entire city is also now wearing a new look with roads leading to the king’s palace now reconstructed. Also, the ancient buildings within the palace have given way to modern structures marched with landscaping. NAIJ.com reports that many streets and roads were busy all through the day in preparation for the coronation that would take place at the Urokpota hall, the traditional Bini hall around the city centre.
